Jarrold Event: Wine Tasting with Oz Clarke
We were recently joined instore by wine expert Oz Clarke for the launch of his new book, English Wine: From still to sparkling.
Oz Clarke is one of the world’s leading wine experts, whose formidable reputation is based on his extensive wine knowledge and no-nonsense approach. He is widely acknowledged as having one of the finest palates of anyone writing about wine today.
He has recently turned his attention to English wines and his new book English Wine: From Still to Sparkling features entries on key wineries, vineyards, and producers from around the country. We welcomed him instore to Jarrold where he presented and discussed five of his favourites, four of which are from our very own local vineyards here in Norfolk, including Winbirri Vineyard, Cobble Hill Vineyard, Flint Vineyard and Chet Valley Vineyard.
Nyetimber Classic Cuvee NV
A classic blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier gives this pale gold, English sparkling wine a perfect balance of elegance and integrity.
Hailing from West Sussex and Hampshire, this Classic Cuveé has been consistently crowned one of the best English sparkling wines.
Cobble Hill Chardonnay 2021
Cobble Hill is based out on the North Norfolk coast and is a boutique vineyard spread over 3.6 hectares producing high quality still and sparkling wines. Offering soft top notes of apple and light citrus this unoaked, versatile wine pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes.
Flint Bacchus 2021
Ranked in the top four English still wines at the 2022 international Wine challenge, this is a vibrant yet delicate Bacchus from the excellent 2021 vintage. Flint moved to Earsham Norfolk in 2015 and now enjoys over 6 hectares with 26,000 vines.
Winibirri Reserve 2018
Aged in oak barrels this bold red is bursting with rich plum and dark berry fruits, coffee and blackberries. Winbirri Vineyard produces world-beating English wines here in Norfolk. They have 25 acres in Surlingham which is an important Anglo-Sexon settlement on the edge of the Norfolk Broads National Park.
Chet Valley Wines, Redpoll 2020 Blush
This quality Sparkling Wine from Chet Valley Vineyard is made from Seyval Blanc, Regent and Carbernet Noir using the traditional method.
Based in Norfolk this family-owned vineyard was one of the first in the county since 1990s.
