Celebrating 20 Years of the Jarrolds Food Hall

This year marks 20 years of the Jarrolds Food Hall, a space that has grown and evolved into one of Norwich's most beloved culinary destinations. What began as a modest delicatessen counter spanning just 600 square feet has flourished into a sprawling 11,000-square-foot hall that showcases the very best of Norfolk’s local producers alongside carefully selected specialists from further afield.  

 

In 2004, the Jarrolds foodie offering began with a vision to bring high-quality, artisan foods to the heart of the community. The original delicatessen counter quickly became a local favourite, offering a carefully curated selection of fine foods. Over the past two decades, Jarrolds has expanded this humble beginning into a world-class food hall that boasts more than 82 suppliers and producers, making it a true destination for food lovers from across the region. 

The Cheese Room

One of the hall’s standout features is the chilled cheese room, a haven for cheese enthusiasts, which was launched in 2022.   It proudly houses approximately 130 varieties of cheese, all aged to perfection. As the festive season approaches, an additional 50 seasonal cheeses are introduced, making the cheese room an even more irresistible stop for shoppers looking to indulge in new and exciting flavours.

Among the many exceptional offerings, one cheese stands out as a fan favourite: Baron Bigod. This smooth and creamy raw milk cheese, produced locally in Suffolk, has become a top seller at Jarrolds. In fact, Christmas 2023 saw a remarkable 330 wheels of Baron Bigod were sold, highlighting its status as a holiday must-have.

Woven into the history of the Jarrolds Food Hall is the launch of our own brand range, Our Type of Food, in 2019 which  a celebration of quality, local ingredients and artisanal craftsmanship. The range reflects the very best of Norfolk’s rich food heritage, offering everything from indulgent preserves and chutneys to carefully curated oils, biscuits, and more. With a focus on supporting local producers and showcasing the exceptional flavours of the region, Our Type of Food has quickly become a firm favourite with customers looking for something both unique and authentically Norfolk.

The 20th birthdays celebrations will kick off on the lower ground floor of Jarrolds on 14th and 15th September, marking the start of the two-week annual Foodie Fortnight. These special days will feature an array of tastings, demonstrations, and exclusive offerings, allowing visitors to experience the finest foods in the region. As part of the festivities, guests can look forward to discovering something wonderfully unique—whether it’s sampling limited-edition products or meeting the talented producers behind the most beloved items in the Food Hall.
