Diabetes Unit at NNUH - August 2017
Donation: £1200
Jarrolds Staff Charity Challenge were delighted to be able to present a cheque for £1200 for the Diabetes Unit at NNUH. The donation was made in memory of our colleague Richard Rose. Richards wife Marilyn and daughter Kirsty joined us for the presentation. The cheque was gratefully accepted by Professor Jeremy Turner and Senior Children’s Diabetes Nurse Suzanne Lee. They explained that the money would be used to extend the funding for a transition facilitator, in essence a youth worker for 14-19 year olds with (predominantly but not exclusively type 1 diabetes) and that it would contribute to the project in a very meaningful way, for a group of patients who tend to have a particularly tough time with their diabetes.
The Norfolk Reading Project - April 2017
Donation: £500
Just to say a massive thank you to Jarrolds for the wonderful donation of £500. We have now spent the money to provide a Volunteer Handbook to support our volunteers during the training session and while they are in schools .
We had a little left over which we have put towards the provision of decodable reading books for the children to help them gain confidence while learning to read. I would be grateful if we could have a copy of the photograph taken at the cheque presentation so that we can put it up on our website . Many thanks again for your support with our project .
Best regards

Jarrolds Donates ‘Bags of Money’ to Big C
Norfolk’s cancer charity, Big C, was this week (8th May) presented, not with ‘bags of money’, but money from bags, as Jarrolds Retail announced a final total of £6923 raised for the charity from all sales of its plastic bags in 2015-2016.
When the Government introduced the carrier bag levy in October 2015, Jarrolds Retail decided to donate the proceeds to a local charity. As it coincided with the start of Big C’s 35th anniversary year celebrations, the company decided to pledge all income from the carrier bag charge to the charity until the end of 2016.
Carole Slaughter, marketing manager at Jarrolds, said “We had no idea how much people’s carrier bag usage would change and therefore how much we’d be able to donate. Many people do now of course bring their own bags and the usage of plastic bags has inevitably dropped. Others however, choose to continue to use carrier bags and are happy to pay the five pence. We are delighted to be able to hand over this sum to Big C, as we know what valuable work it will fund in supporting people in Norfolk and Waveney affected by cancer.”
Dr.Chris Bushby, CEO at Big C, said, “A huge thank you to Jarrolds and their customers for their support over the past 15 months with the donations from the carrier bag charge. We are extremely grateful to receive the funds, which are so vital to be able to continue the work we do locally through our centres, services and the pioneering research taking place on our doorstep at the Norwich Research Park.”

Carols with the King 2016
Donation: Alfie Hewett £1000 NARS £1000
Jarrolds Staff Charity Challenge were delighted today to be able to present cheques for £1000 to Alfie Hewett and to Paul Strutt from NARS (Norfolk Accident Rescue Service).
The monies were raised at the annual Carol with the Kings evening which took place at the Forum on Sunday December 4th. An audience of 370 were entertained by Olly Day with a mix of jokes, witticisms and songs, Dale Bullimore who wowed everyone with a great song medley and then the Blue Sueders with Elvis, who entertained as always with fun, enthusiasm and a great selection of songs – with the audience joining in – both singing and dancing.
The evening raised just over £2600 - £2000 of which has been granted to Alfie Hewett and NARS with the remainder going towards the next grant to be made from the Jarrolds Staff Charity Challenge.
NARS – Norfolk Accident Rescue Service. This service attends major road accidents and medical emergencies and works alongside the ambulance crews and air ambulance. It is manned by volunteer doctors and paramedics and receives no funding from the NHS so relies on charity events and donations. Paul Strutt from NARS also joined us on the evening and thanked JSCC for the fundraising and also for helping to raise awareness of NARS and the service they provide
Alfie Hewett – the wheelchair tennis player from Brundall has this year won the Wheelchair Doubles at Wimbledon and 2 silver medals in the Paralympics. Alfie and his family joined us on the evening and he expressed his sincere gratitude for the funds and explained how that will be used to help with his travel and training expenses – this week he heard he has qualified for the Australian Open in 2017.
Picture shows Alfie Hewett and Paul Strutt accepting cheques from Elvis with Carole Slaughter and Suzie Abel from Jarrolds.
Bags make money for Big C
Donation: £2,000
At the start of its 35th anniversary year, Big C has its first £2,000 in the bag and the promise of more to come - all thanks to our Staff Charity Challenge!
Here at Jarrolds we decided to donate the 5p from all sales of its plastic bags to Norfolk’s Big C Cancer Charity, when the Government introduced now legislation back in October, until the end of the year. But in light of 2016 being Big C’s 35th anniversary year, Jarrolds have pledged that all donations for the entire year in 2016 will be given to supporting the work of Big C and cancer patients throughout Norfolk and Waveney Valley area.
Pictured is marketing manager Carole Slaughter, together with Jarrold’s charity co-ordinator Suzie Abel presenting the cheque to Dr Chris Bushby, Big C’s chief executive at the launch event to celebrate the year.
"Plastic carrier bag usage has of course dropped. Many customers now bring their own bags, others will say no to a plastic bag but some continue to use and pay 5p. We had no idea how the usage would change or how much we would be able to donate when the charge started in October, but we are delighted to be handing over this cheque for £2,000,” said Mrs Slaughter.
Dr Chris Bushby said: "We are extremely grateful to Jarrolds and its customers for their support and delighted they have chosen to help the region’s cancer patients with the pledge for this year’s 5p donations for plastic bags.”

A full house at The Forum was treated to festive music from Dale Bullimore, the Blue Sueders with Elvis and local comedian Pat Nearney.

Men donate their face, and much like taking part in a run or a walk for charity, ask their family and friends to sponsor their efforts.
Movember supports world class men’s health programmes that combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges. These programmes, directed by the Movember Foundation, are focused on awareness and education, living with and beyond cancer, staying mentally healthy, living with and beyond mental illness and research to achieve our vision of an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health.

The premises in Coalisland provide a base for get-togethers. Cancer patients and their families can discuss their needs and obtain up-to-date information. Information regarding their illness helps cancer patients to understand their illness better so they can in turn make more informed choices about their treatment and future. There is also a coffee morning in LILAC house every Friday morning to give the opportunity for cancer patients and their families to get support from others in similar circumstances.
In today’s society when most people are guilty of not making time for others, LiLAC volunteers step in to support cancer patients and their families. They also offer relaxation therapies such as Reflexology, Reiki and Chi-Massage to their users. LiLAC also provides practical help to those undergoing treatment, such as help with housework, transport to and from hospital etc. LILAC works closely with other agencies in order to raise awareness of the journey cancer sufferers have to make.

Nelson's Journey
Donation: £1000
Nelson’s Journey was founded by Kim Greensmith, a qualified social worker along with another group of social service workers. The birth mother of her adopted daughters Katie and Hannah had died at a very young age.
Recognising the importance of support for children suffering a bereavement the group established Nelson’s Journey in November 1997, to help bereaved children and young people throughout Norfolk deal with the anger, distress and confusion of losing a loved one.
The name Nelson’s Journey was chosen to inspire the two main aspects of the charity – we are local, hence the use of Norfolk’s own Admiral Nelson, and ‘Journey’ was chosen as bereavement is a journey which begins the minute your loved one dies and lasts a lifetime. The work that the group began 15 years ago continues and Nelson’s Journey has gone on to grow year-on-year.
